This is "ru" of "Tsuruya". It was written around 400 years ago. It's definitely something we can't make again.
We have created room number plates! For long, long time, we have been using unique name for every room. But it's difficult for international guests to remember the name of room. So, we began to combine the name and the number of each room. We are trying to be a more helpful ryokan for international guests. Please let us know if you have any idea we can make for you.
Our entrance's new year decoration. We will see you at this entrance.
A paint adorned at Tsuruya's corridor, Two cranes taking wings. Let's fly like them in 2014!
After Christmas, we will finally have year end. Today, we cleaned the Christmas tree and set Kadomatsu, the New Year's decorative pine trees. Nowadays, this kind of hand-built decoration is very rare. Thanks to the two craftsmen who made them for us. This is how the decoration has made.
Japanese traditional paper shade lamp and Christmas tree are unexpectedly fit together.
Wooden box for receiving money in Edo era, long time ago. After eating soba, Travelers threw coins into this box and departed. We often received stones and piece of cup instead of coins.
/history/
Recently, we see people walking on Nakasendo Trail. Originally, Karuizawa is one of the post stations. It may be very different from today.
We added Kyoho Grape in our dessert selection after dinner. It is grown in the farm nearby Karuizawa. So sweeeeet!!
Our garden has some more items from Edo era. It is supposed to be a stone for receiving water. It is now totally covered with moss, it had been used for a certain purpose.
Trace of Edo era still remains at the garden of Tsuruya Ryokan. This stone. It used to be a grind stone long time ago.
Nakasendo trek is becoming boom. Tsuruya Ryokan began as inn of Nakasendo walking trail in the beginning of Edo era. Even after 400 year later, now, Nakasendo travelers stay at Tsuruya Ryokan. (This photo is displayed at corridor.)
Continued from yesterday, it's the story about water wheel. This is the frame of water wheel that is displayed at our lobby. It is carved "Attract people without voice". We should not attract customers by using voice but attract them by our own virtue. This is one of the items that has lots of inherited passion.
Long time ago, the family head of Tsuruya is called Nakaemon and after retirement, called Sakubei. Sakubei's daily work is making soba by using water wheel. Now, Water Wheel Road is where it used to be. Its shaft is used for shoehorn hanger. It is the item that connects past to present.
Today, with enjoying the balmy breeze, many people were walking in front of Tsuruya Ryokan. This picture was taken around 50 years ago. The building is slightly different but the other atmosphere is very similar to today. The people were enjoying the same breeze at that time.
